This blog will relate Hamlet to the media

Hamlet and the ghost.

In Hamlet, revenge was the most significant theme in the play, where both the cause and the consequences lead to death. The play starts off with a ghost introducing himself as Hamlet’s father and implies that he should take revenge for his dead father. As you know, most of Shakespeare’s plays end up with all the main characters dying. Hamlet’s countless attempts towards Claudius fails and he ends up killing someone directly or indirectly. At the end of the play, Hamlet dies from a poisoned sword that Laertes arranges to avenge for his father, Polonius’s death.

Since technology has grown so much through the past decades, any type of news or messages spread faster than you expect. This is the reason behind the increasing numbers of cyberbullying in our society. I believe that the use of social media has changed ever since its was created. Not implying that social media is always bad but, I have been warned many times about this issue. Social media was initially created to easily share useful information and personal messages with others. However, it has become the platform where hierarchy occurs. Due to the deficient gratification we get from hurting or looking down on others. This has slowly shifted our morals and most importantly it has developed into something very dangerous that can result in death.

Ophelia falling from a tree where she drowns and dies.

As I was reading the play, Ophelia’s death reminded me of the many victims who suffered from cyber-bullying and end up killing themselves. Just like how Ophelia was heartbroken that she was unable to even hold a funeral for her father where she happened to killed herself as well. This happens due to the amount of power a group obtains which scares the many individuals in our society. In the play, Hamlet was the prince where he obviously had a lot of power in the court. Therefore, nothing seriously happened to Hamlet after he murdered Polonius. I believe that Ophelia felt like there was no more hope in this world so she committed suicide. This also happens to people who are facing or have faced cyber-bullying. Since the people who started rumors about someone keeps on spreading it, which makes others believe in the wrong truth. For that reason, the small individuals loses hope and trust when people do not believe their side of the story. They end up going through something very traumatizing or basically death.

In conclusion, Ophelia's death and the victims of cyber-bullying had a relation to overpowering people who intimidate smaller or weaker individuals.

Your connection of cyberbullying to Ophelia’s death is pretty good. I think that in a way as well that Polonius who was really close to Ophelia and was controlling her can also be a represented. He would be the ones that are close to us, that sometimes the closest people to us are the ones that can hurt us the most, whether intentional or unintentional. With Polonius is seen to control Ophelia telling her to obey him and do what he wants. Of course, he acts in the best interest of both Ophelia and himself, but what he was doing was hurting her more than helping her. Sometimes the people closest to us are the ones that give us the…

Stephanie. I really enjoyed reading your blog. I agree with you and how social media in today’s society has taken up many people's time of the day. Everyone has a phone in their hand and is always looking down at their screen. I also agree with you that Ophelia’s death reminds me of many victims that suffered from cyber-bullying and ended up committing suicide. That’s probably how Ophelia felt like; After her father died she had no one there with her to support her grieving and there was no hope left in her. Overall, you did a great job writing this blog!

Great post! I never really thought to compare Hamlet to social media because on the surface, they seem so different. But now that you mention the similarities, they really are there and I can see why they would be alike. Social media tends to be something that people can get attached or addicted to. In the end when you use it too much, it ends up being harmful. Ophelia's relationship with Hamlet is sort of similar as well. She seems to have gotten attached to her relationship with Hamlet and in the end, it is one of the things that could have caused her madness and death. Social media is great when it is being used properly but if it…

This was a very interesting blog to me because I didn't really think about Ophelias death this way. The way you describe it conmvinced me that it is very possible that the pressure from everyone that made her kill herself is very similar to cyber bullying in todays society. Everyone our age is very focused on being noticed on social media and posting things that people will want to see, most of the things I see is very negative. People are very stressed from work in school and issues in life that are very hard to resolve and I know many people that post things, maybe not with the intention to be negative, but it does turn out that way.…

Good connection with Hamlet and social media. Ophelia was affected by so much pain from all the things happening during that time. From being cruelly heartbroken by Hamlet, to losing your father right after, Ophelia was facing a lot of emotional pain from these events. With social media and spread of information, things can get worse with how quick it can spread as mentioned in your post. Relating Hamlet's words and actions to the effects of social media is an interesting idea. His words and actions lead to serious consequences and so does the words of people on social media. They both can lead to pain and suffering and, in Ophelia's case, it can also lead to suicide.
